The Campbellsville University Harrodsburg Pioneers have earned a spot in the 2020 NCCAA National Golf Tournament as they earned the team's first regional championship in program history Tuesday at Gibson Bay in Richmond.
The Pioneers joined Alice Lloyd, Oakland City University and Kentucky Christian University in the Mideast Region competition.
After a strong first day by the Pioneers, CU Harrodsburg quickly saw its lead vanish in the early competition of day two before rediscovering their stride on the back nine.
"It was huge for us," said Head Coach Mike Kehoe, "to get a victory at this level in our second year is huge for our program."
Freshman Kameron Gehring had an outstanding performance leading the Pioneers and finishing third overall in the tournament. On the day Gehring shot a 77, which was then tied for second place. After a rough start to the day on day two, Gehring bounced back in major way on the back nine to finish the day with an 82. He shot 159 on the weekend to lead the Pioneers, followed by Chance Presley and Parker Monhollen who both shot 161.
"I was thoroughly impressed with Kameron (Gehring) in his freshman year," Kehoe said. "I was also impressed with Parker Monhollen's leadership, helping lead our team by example."
The Mideast Regional Championship win is the first varsity championship win in the athletic department at Campbellsville University Harrodsburg.
"I couldn't be prouder of our golf program and Coach Kehoe for the incredible job they've done getting to this level," said Dalton Christopher, Director of Athletics. "We are looking forward to enjoying this win and supporting our Pioneers as they compete to bring a national championship to CU Harrodsburg."
The upcoming national tournament appearance will be the second national appearance for CU Harrodsburg after the Lady Pioneers Women's Basketball team appeared in the 2020 NCCAA National Tournament in March. Tuesday's victory becomes the premier performance for the Men's Golf team in the program's second season.
"Our athletic department has grown tremendously over the last four years, our athletes and coaches have shown a tremendous commitment to athletic and academic performance in a Christ based culture," said Christopher.
The 2020 NCCAA Men's Golf National Tournament will take place on October 19th - 21st in Hammock Beach, Florida.
